Cabinet War Rooms London
One of the lesser-known but intensely fascinating spots in London is the basement of a government office building which served as the headquarters for the British government during the Second World War. In the 1920's there was a growing concern for the potential destruction caused by aerial attacks. After a variety of options were examined, it was decided that this basement, located close to the residence of the Prime Minister, could be reinforced and equipped as an emergency operations center.
It was finished one week before Germany invaded Poland and Britain declared war. Every detail has been tediously reproduced, right down to the location of pencils and paper clips. For 6 years Winston Churchill and his aides endured the attacks of the Luftwaffe and directed the war from these rooms. Recent world events have increased interest in the War Rooms and similar installations. In fact, over half of the 300,000 people who visit this site annually are Americans.
