Concerts of London
London is the world capital of classical music. No other city offers such a range of options to its residents or a rich library of recorded music for the rest of the world to enjoy. There are 5 major orchestras who call London home. They, along with a number of lesser-known groups, have rich recording histories.
The London Symphony Orchestra is in residence at the Barbican Centre. Their repertoire focuses on the traditional classics. The BBC Symphony Orchestra performs more premiers than any other. Their major concert series is always a tough ticket; and their evening concerts, broadcast from the Maida Vale studios are always enjoyable for their spontaneity. Tickets are free - contact the BBC for details.
The Royal Philharmonic is the world's most recorded orchestra and is heard on the soundtrack of more films than any other. They perform at Royal Festival Hall. The Philharmonia is the most traditional of the orchestras in London and splits time between London and Paris. Finally, the London Sinfonietta is a smaller orchestra with an outstanding reputation for its contemporary and British repertoire.
