London Theater
Every year London's 51 theaters open their doors to over 11 million visitors. "Theatreland", the official name given to London's theater district in the West End, is home to large commercial theaters which specialize in big, expensive productions of well-known hits. Some of the shows can be long runners, particularly musicals like "Phantom of the Opera". There is a great deal of variety and talent to be found here.
National Theatre and the Globe Theatre are popular repertoire companies in London. The National Theatre is subsidized, and as a result, will take a risk with new and unknown writers and plays that may have limited appeal. That's not to say that the quality is not first-rate, however. Many plays that do well here eventually move on to the West End.
Shakespeare's Globe Theater offers the best of the Bard. Of course, experimental theater and smaller productions can be found in pub theaters all over London. No matter what your tastes or your price range, you are sure to find something to suit your tastes in London's theater scene.
