London Zoo
When the Zoo first opened a century and a half ago, it was used only by scientists for the study of exotic animals. Finally opened to the public in 1847, it quickly became one of the most famous and important zoos in the world. While it is certainly not one of the larger zoos, the London Zoo is known for the species of animals that reside there. Nearly one animal in five is on the world's endangered species list.
Some of the insects and reptiles that are kept here are not found in zoos anywhere else in the world. You will find amazing bird-eating spiders in the insect house and be able to see nocturnal creatures fully active under synthetic lighting conditions. Like all zoos, this makes for a great destination for families traveling to London. In fact, this is the site of the oldest children's zoo in the world. Be sure to catch the penguins at feeding time.
