Oxford Street London
Oxford Street has become one of the busiest shopping districts in London and the entire world. The history of the street dates back to the Roman Empire as one of the major routes into and out of London. But over the last century, led by prestigious department stores, retail development has been the hallmark of Oxford Street.
Today there are over three hundred shops here, making it one of the most heavily concentrated shopping areas in the world. Here you can find haute couture or inexpensive trinkets. Some of Britain's most revered retail names have an Oxford Street address, as do retail chains from around the world.
As with nearly everything in London, tradition is alive and well here. The oldest record store in the world is on Oxford Street, and the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas decorations has become one of the cities premier events, attracting large crowds and some international celebrities who have thrown the switch, opening the Christmas shopping season.
