St. Paul's Cathedral London
St. Paul's Cathedral has become an icon for the city of London. First built in the 7th century just after the arrival of the first Christian missionaries, the church has survived a number of fires, lightning strikes, foreign invasions and national insurrections. The current building was begun in the 17th century, just after the Fire of London destroyed it and everything else in the city. Christopher Wren was still a young architect when he was commissioned for the task, but many believe that the cathedral was his greatest masterpiece. Wren endowed the building with Classical stability, as well as touches of Baroque whimsy. To fully appreciate the structure you need to be prepared to climb some stairs. The first set will take you to the Whispering Gallery where you can literally whisper to people seated on the opposite side of the dome and they hear you as clearly as if you were seated alongside them. Continue the climb and you will be rewarded with one of the best views in London.
