The Tower Bridge London
Despite the imagery evoked by its palaces, towers, and traditions, London is a changing city. In the first month of operation, the Tower Bridge was raised 655 times. This year it will raise only 500 times or so. Automobile traffic now rules the day. Although this venerable structure has the same medieval look as the Tower that has resided next door for centuries, the bridge was actually completed in the late 19th century.
While you will certainly want to take in the views afforded by the high level walkways - built for use by pedestrians while the bridge was raised, and now a terrific spot for photos - don't miss the Tower Bridge Experience located inside the building. This tour provides a fascinating look into the construction and operation of the Bridge. Included in the tour are the original steam engines which were used to raise and lower the deck, and a number of hands-on displays and films to complete the experience.
