Westminster Abbey London
One of the most famous churches in the world, Westminster Abbey is best known as the site of coronations, weddings and the final resting place of British royalty. Originally begun in 1245, construction continued for over 500 years. Laid out in the traditional Byzantine shape of the cross, the church reflects a variety of architectural styles and influences.
Since William I, nearly all British Monarchs have been crowned here (you can get a look at the Coronation Throne on your tour), and most have been entombed here. Of course, there are many others who have been buried at Westminster. The famed Poet's Corner is the resting place of Chaucer, Spenser, Browning, Tennyson and others. Many who are not buried here are represented by statues and monuments. Of special interest are the 10 statues of 20th century martyrs.
The queues are long and no photography is permitted within Westminster Abbey, but it is a spot that should not be missed. Saint and skeptic alike will be moved by the grandeur and the glory of this historic old church.
